C.A.R.E. Week

What is C.A.R.E. Week?

C.A.R.E. (Cancer Awareness a Real Effort) Week is an event Kappa Phi Gamma hosts Nationally in April, which is national cancer awareness month.  Each school picks an organization in which they want to donate towards. Then, all proceeds made during C.A.R.E. Week goes towards that specific organization.  C.A.R.E. Week is run entirely on sponsorship of local stores, groups and school funding.  Having this event funded by outside sources allows us to plan an exciting and fun week.  It also ensures the community that the entire amount of money we receive throughout the week is donated staight toward the charity/cause .  Each day of the week hosts a specific event: Kick-Off Rally, Candlelight Vigil, Service Day, Party and Mr. C.A.R.E. Week Pageant.  We encourage the entire campus to get involved and come out to each event!

"Where Kids With Cancer Can Just Be Kids"

Nothing seems as unfair as a child stricken with cancer. Children shouldn't spend sunny days in the hospital suffering through spinal taps and chemotherapy. They shouldn't be fighting for their lives against an enemy the can't even see. It's hard on families. It's hard on kids. But there is a place where kids with cancer smile and laugh and play, a place where they're not "different" or "sick," a place where they have the chance to be kids again. It's called Camp Friendship.

Camp Friendship, the premier program of the Carol Jean Cancer Foundation, Inc. (CJCF), is a special, week-long residential camp for children with cancer - offered free of charge -- that is designed especially with their needs in mind. The kids who attend are being treated at area hospitals (listed in alphabetical order) including Bethesda Naval, Children's National Medical Center, Fairfax, Georgetown University's Lombardi Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins, the National Institutes of Health, Sinai Medical Center, University of Maryland Medical Systems and Walter Reed. Several sessions of Camp Friendship are held each summer at the permanent camping facilities of the Carol Jean Cancer Foundation, which is located on 43 acres of wooded Montgomery County farmland in Laytonsville, Maryland. "Not all camps have their own site, but having your own site definitely has its advantages," says Cathy Linfoot of Camp Good Days & Special Times, New York, and Camp Friendship mentor. "You can be there whenever you want to be there. You can do more, offer more and do it at the convenience of the kids and their families. There's a certain spirit that you make at your camp that you don't get at a rented facility. You build memories. Coming back to the same place is really good for the kids. It's a home away from home."
